The US has more globally ranked universities than any other country — from the Ivy League to strong public state universities. Ghanaian students with excellent WASSCE grades and GPA are competitive applicants, and many have successfully gained places at Harvard, MIT, Yale and other elite institutions.
After graduating, Ghanaian students can work in the US for 1 year on OPT — extending to 3 years for STEM graduates. Ghana's growing tech and engineering talent pool makes STEM OPT particularly valuable for Ghanaian computer science, data science and engineering graduates.
The Ghanaian diaspora in the US — particularly in New York, Houston, Washington DC and Atlanta — provides strong support networks. Ghanaian student associations at US universities offer mentorship, accommodation help, cultural connection and professional networking.
Ghana is a priority country for Fulbright Scholarships (full funding for US Masters/PhD). The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program also provides funding for exceptional Ghanaian undergraduate students at partner US universities. Many institutions offer merit-based international scholarships as well.
WASSCE is accepted at US universities for undergraduate admission. A WES or ECE credential evaluation is typically required. Ghanaian bachelor's degrees (University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC, etc.) are well recognised for US graduate admissions — credential evaluation converting Ghana's 4.0 GPA scale to the US standard is standard practice. GRE/GMAT may be required for some graduate programmes.
