Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan students ask about studying abroad โ€” answered in one place.

Entry Requirements

Is WAEC or NECO accepted by universities abroad?

It depends on the country and the level of study you're applying for:

  • UK (Undergraduate): Many universities accept WAEC/NECO alongside a Foundation Year or International Year One. Direct A-level equivalent entry is rare without UK qualifications.
  • UK (Masters): WAEC is not required โ€” you need a recognised Bachelor's degree (minimum 2:2).
  • Germany: A Nigerian secondary school certificate alone is generally not sufficient. You typically need a completed undergraduate degree to apply for Masters programmes.
  • Canada & Australia: WAEC results can support an application but are rarely the primary qualification โ€” a degree is required for postgraduate study.

Each university page on our site shows whether WAEC is accepted and under what conditions.

What GPA do I need to study abroad?

Requirements vary by university and programme, but here are typical benchmarks on the Nigerian 5.0 scale:

  • 3.5 โ€“ 5.0: Strong โ€” qualifies for most universities including Russell Group (UK) and top Canadian schools.
  • 3.0 โ€“ 3.4: Good โ€” eligible for the majority of programmes. Some top universities may consider this a 2:2 (borderline).
  • 2.4 โ€“ 2.9: Some universities accept this, particularly with a foundation or pathway programme.
  • Below 2.4: Consider a pre-masters or foundation year first.

UK universities use a 2:1 / 2:2 class system. A 3.5/5.0 Nigerian GPA is broadly equivalent to a 2:1. Use our eligibility checker to see which universities match your GPA.

What IELTS score do I need?

Typical minimum requirements by destination:

  • UK: 6.0 overall for undergraduate; 6.5 for Masters. Top universities (Russell Group) often require 6.5โ€“7.0.
  • Canada: 6.5 overall for most universities (minimum 6.0 per component).
  • Australia: 6.0โ€“6.5 overall depending on university and programme.
  • Germany: Most programmes taught in English require 6.0โ€“6.5. German-taught programmes require B2/C1 German proficiency instead.
  • Ireland: 6.0โ€“6.5 overall, with most programmes at 6.5.

Check our IELTS Guide for a full breakdown by country and university type.

Can I get into a university without IELTS?

Yes, in some cases. Alternatives to IELTS include:

  • TOEFL iBT โ€” widely accepted by UK, Canadian and US universities.
  • PTE Academic โ€” accepted by most UK and Australian universities.
  • Duolingo English Test โ€” accepted by a growing number of universities, especially in the US and Canada.
  • English-medium degree exemption โ€” if you completed your previous degree entirely in English, some universities will waive the language test requirement.

Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan students who studied fully in English often qualify for an exemption. Always check directly with the university admissions team.

What is a foundation year and do I need one?

A Foundation Year (also called an International Foundation Programme or IFP) is a preparatory year before the main degree. It bridges the gap between your home qualifications and the entry requirements of a UK or Australian undergraduate degree.

You may need a foundation year if:

  • You have WAEC/NECO but not A-levels or an equivalent qualification.
  • Your GPA is slightly below the direct entry threshold.
  • Your IELTS score meets the foundation year minimum (usually 5.5) but not the direct entry minimum.

Foundation years add one year and extra cost, but they often lead directly into a full degree at the same university. For Masters programmes, a foundation year is not normally required โ€” a Bachelor's degree is sufficient.

What does "Direct Entry" mean on university pages?

On checkadmit.com, the entry status badge tells you whether students from your passport can apply directly to the main degree programme:

  • Direct Entry: Your qualifications are accepted as direct admission without a foundation year or pathway.
  • Foundation Year Required: You must complete a preparatory year before starting the main programme.
  • Credential Evaluation: The university will assess your documents on a case-by-case basis before deciding.
  • Not Accepted: The university does not currently accept students from your passport for that programme.

Scholarships & Funding

Are there fully funded scholarships for African students?

Yes. Several fully funded scholarships are available to Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan students:

  • Chevening (UK) โ€” full tuition + living allowance + flights. For Masters students with 2+ years of work experience.
  • DAAD (Germany) โ€” full tuition + โ‚ฌ992/month stipend + health insurance. For postgraduate research and Masters.
  • Mastercard Foundation Scholars (various) โ€” full funding at partner universities. Targeted at academically talented students from sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships (UK) โ€” full funding for Masters and PhD. Open to citizens of Commonwealth countries.
  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) โ€” full tuition + ยฅ3,000/month + accommodation at Chinese universities.

Browse all tracked scholarships on our Scholarships page.

What is the Chevening Scholarship and am I eligible?

Chevening is the UK government's flagship international scholarship programme. It covers full tuition fees, a monthly living stipend, travel costs and other allowances for a one-year Masters degree at any eligible UK university.

Eligibility:

  • Citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya all qualify)
  • At least 2 years of work experience
  • Bachelor's degree at 2:1 level or above
  • Commitment to return to your home country after the scholarship

Applications open annually in August and close in November. Results are announced the following April. Visit the official Chevening website for the current cycle.

What is the DAAD scholarship?

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) is Germany's main scholarship organisation. It offers multiple programmes for African students:

  • Monthly stipend: โ‚ฌ992 for Masters students, โ‚ฌ1,200 for PhD researchers (2025โ€“2026 rates)
  • Health, accident and liability insurance
  • Travel subsidy
  • Some programmes also include a German language course allowance

Since tuition at German public universities is already free (or very low), DAAD essentially covers your full cost of living in Germany. DAAD scholarships are highly competitive โ€” a strong academic record (GPA 3.5+/5.0) and a well-written motivation letter are essential.

What is the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program funds academically talented young Africans to study at partner universities around the world. It covers full tuition, accommodation, meals, books and a living stipend.

Partner universities include institutions in the UK, Canada, the US, and several African universities. The programme specifically targets students who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to giving back to their communities.

Applications are handled directly through the partner university โ€” check whether your target university is a Mastercard Foundation partner on its individual page on our site.

Can I work while studying abroad?

Work rights on a student visa vary significantly by country:

  • UK: Up to 20 hours per week during term time; full-time during vacation periods (for degrees of 6+ months at a recognised institution).
  • Germany: 120 full days or 240 half days per year.
  • Canada: Up to 20 hours per week during term; full-time during breaks.
  • Australia: Up to 48 hours per fortnight during study; unlimited during official breaks.
  • Ireland: Up to 20 hours per week during term time.
  • USA: On-campus work only (up to 20 hours) โ€” off-campus work requires separate authorisation (CPT/OPT).

These rules are set by immigration authorities, not universities. Always verify current rules on the official government website for your destination country.

Applications & Deadlines

When should I start applying to universities abroad?

Start at least 12โ€“18 months before your intended start date. Here's a rough timeline for a September intake:

  • 18 months before: Research universities and shortlist based on requirements, cost and career goals.
  • 12 months before: Take IELTS, request transcripts, get reference letters.
  • 9โ€“12 months before: Submit applications (UK UCAS deadline is typically January for undergraduate).
  • 6 months before: Apply for scholarships (Chevening closes November; DAAD deadlines vary).
  • 3โ€“6 months before: Receive offers, accept, apply for student visa.

Many programmes, especially popular Masters in the UK and Canada, fill up quickly. Applying early in the admissions cycle significantly improves your chances.

What documents do I need to apply?

A typical application requires:

  • Academic transcripts โ€” certified copies of all degrees and certificates, usually with official translations if not in English.
  • IELTS / English proficiency certificate โ€” score report from an official test centre.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) โ€” 500โ€“1,000 words explaining why you want to study this programme at this university.
  • References โ€” 2โ€“3 academic or professional reference letters.
  • CV / Rรฉsumรฉ โ€” especially for postgraduate applications.
  • Valid passport โ€” scan of the data page.
  • Research proposal โ€” required for PhD applications.

Some universities also require proof of funding at the application stage. Always check the specific requirements on the university website.

How does UCAS work for UK universities?

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised application system for UK undergraduate study. Through one UCAS application you can apply to up to 5 universities simultaneously.

Key deadlines:

  • 15 October: Oxbridge and most Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary programmes.
  • 31 January: Most other UK undergraduate programmes (main deadline).
  • 30 June: Late applications via UCAS Extra or Clearing.

For postgraduate (Masters/PhD) study, you apply directly to the university โ€” not through UCAS. Each university has its own online portal and deadline. Many rolling-admission programmes accept applications year-round.

How do I get a student visa once I have an offer?

The visa process varies by destination, but the general steps are:

  • 1. Receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) โ€” your university sends this once you accept your offer (UK specific; other countries have equivalents).
  • 2. Gather documents โ€” passport, CAS/admission letter, proof of funds, IELTS, tuberculosis test (UK requires this for Nigerian/Ghanaian/Kenyan applicants).
  • 3. Pay the visa application fee โ€” and the Immigration Health Surcharge for UK.
  • 4. Submit your biometrics โ€” at a visa application centre in your home country.
  • 5. Wait for a decision โ€” typically 3โ€“8 weeks depending on the country.

Costs & Finances

How much does it cost to study in the UK?

Tuition fees (international students):

  • Undergraduate: ยฃ15,000โ€“ยฃ26,000/year
  • Masters: ยฃ14,000โ€“ยฃ35,000/year
  • MBA: ยฃ20,000โ€“ยฃ60,000/year

Living costs: Approximately ยฃ12,000โ€“ยฃ15,000/year in most UK cities; ยฃ15,000โ€“ยฃ20,000/year in London.

The UK government requires proof of ยฃ1,334/month (outside London) or ยฃ1,334/month (in London) in your bank account for visa purposes. Funds must be held continuously for at least 28 days before applying.

Is studying in Germany really free?

Mostly, yes โ€” but not completely free. Here's the breakdown:

  • Most German states: No tuition fees for international students at public universities (you pay only a semester contribution of โ‚ฌ150โ€“โ‚ฌ350 for admin, transport pass and student union).
  • Baden-Wรผrttemberg: International students pay โ‚ฌ3,000/year in tuition on top of the semester fee โ€” the only German state with this policy.
  • Private universities: Charge full fees like any other country (โ‚ฌ10,000โ€“โ‚ฌ30,000/year).

Living costs in Germany are approximately โ‚ฌ800โ€“โ‚ฌ1,100/month including rent, food and transport. The German student visa requires proof of โ‚ฌ11,208/year (โ‚ฌ934/month) in a blocked account.

What is proof of funds and how much do I need?

Proof of funds (also called proof of financial means) is a bank statement or blocked account showing you can support yourself financially while studying. Requirements by country:

  • UK: ยฃ1,334/month for studies outside London; ยฃ1,334/month in London. Must cover the full duration of your course (up to 9 months shown).
  • Germany: โ‚ฌ11,208 in a blocked account (Sperrkonto) โ€” this covers one year of living costs at the official rate.
  • Canada: CA$10,000/year (approximately) plus first-year tuition fees.
  • Australia: AUD$21,041/year for living costs plus full tuition fees.
  • Ireland: โ‚ฌ7,000โ€“โ‚ฌ10,000 per year depending on the course duration.

These are the minimum amounts for visa purposes โ€” actual costs of living and studying are often higher.

Are there affordable English-taught Masters programmes in Europe?

Yes. Germany offers the best value for English-taught postgraduate degrees โ€” free tuition (except Baden-Wรผrttemberg), strong academic reputation, and post-study work rights for graduates. Other affordable European options include the Netherlands (โ‚ฌ2,000โ€“โ‚ฌ15,000/year), and some Eastern European countries.

Ireland is another option โ€” English-speaking, EU-recognised degrees, and a 24-month post-study work visa. Tuition fees range from โ‚ฌ10,000โ€“โ‚ฌ25,000/year for international students.

Countries

What is the easiest country to get a student visa for Nigerians?

"Easiest" depends on your profile, but here's a rough comparison of approval rates and typical experience for Nigerian applicants:

  • Germany: Structured process, high approval rate when documents are complete. The blocked account requirement is straightforward. Consulate appointments can take 2โ€“4 months to schedule.
  • Canada: Variable approval rates for Nigerian applicants. Strong ties to home country and clear financial proof are critical. Apply early.
  • UK: Well-defined process. Refusal rate for Nigerians has been notable โ€” strong financial evidence and a genuine intent to study and return are key.
  • Ireland: Generally positive approval rates. Requires proof of funds and a letter of acceptance from the university.
  • China: High approval rate. The application process is relatively straightforward for scholarship holders (CSC).

Regardless of destination, having clean financial records, a genuine study plan and strong ties to your home country significantly improves your chances.

Can I stay and work after graduating?

Post-study work rights by country (as of 2025โ€“2026):

  • UK: Graduate Route visa โ€” 2 years for Bachelor's and Masters graduates; 3 years for PhD graduates.
  • Canada: Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) โ€” up to 3 years depending on the length of your programme.
  • Germany: 18-month job-seeker visa after graduation to find a job matching your qualification.
  • Australia: Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) โ€” 2โ€“4 years depending on location and qualification level.
  • Ireland: Third Level Graduate Programme โ€” 24 months for degree holders; 12 months for Higher Diploma graduates.
  • USA: OPT (Optional Practical Training) โ€” 12 months standard; 36 months for STEM graduates.
Is China a good option for Nigerian students?

China is an increasingly popular destination for African students, particularly because of generous scholarship availability. Key points:

  • CSC Scholarship โ€” the Chinese Government Scholarship covers full tuition, accommodation and provides ยฅ3,000/month (approximately $410) stipend. Thousands of places are available for African students annually.
  • English-taught programmes โ€” top universities like Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan and Zhejiang offer many programmes in English, especially at Masters and PhD level.
  • Academic reputation โ€” Chinese universities have risen sharply in global rankings and are well-regarded in STEM, engineering and business.
  • Cost โ€” even without a scholarship, tuition and living costs are significantly lower than in the UK or US.
