Study in China
for Ghana Students

China is an increasingly popular destination for Ghanaian students, supported by Ghana-China bilateral agreements, the Chinese Government Scholarship, and a growing Ghanaian student community at universities in Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan. Ghana and China have had formal diplomatic and educational ties since 1960, making this one of Africa's longest-standing China partnerships.

Why Study in China as a Ghana Student?

Chinese Government Scholarship — Full Coverage

CSC scholarships cover full tuition, dormitory, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend (¥2,500 for undergrad, ¥3,000 for Masters, ¥3,500 for PhD). Ghana receives a dedicated CSC allocation each year through the Ghana-China bilateral agreement, administered through the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat.

Ghana-China Bilateral Education Agreement

Ghana and China signed a bilateral education agreement that includes annual scholarship allocations. The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat coordinates with the Chinese Embassy in Accra to process CSC applications. This government-to-government channel makes the scholarship process more streamlined for Ghanaian applicants.

English-Taught Masters at Top Universities

Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, SJTU and Zhejiang University all offer English-taught postgraduate programmes. No Chinese language required. Ghanaian graduates in Engineering, Business, Medicine and IT find strong match programmes at China's elite universities.

Very Low Cost of Living

Outside Beijing and Shanghai, living costs in China are extremely affordable — ¥3,000–¥5,000/month covers comfortable student living. Combined with a CSC stipend, most Ghanaian scholarship holders can save money rather than spend. Affordable cities for students include Wuhan, Xi'an, Harbin and Chengdu.

How Ghana Qualifications Are Recognised in China

WASSCE results are accepted at Chinese universities for undergraduate admission — minimum 5 credits including English and Mathematics. Ghanaian bachelor's degrees are recognised for graduate study. Unlike some destinations, no national service requirement applies to Ghanaian applicants. Language requirements: IELTS 6.0 for English-taught programmes; HSK 4–5 for Chinese-taught courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Studying in China from Ghana

How does the Ghana-China CSC scholarship application work?
Ghanaian applicants can apply through two channels: (1) Through the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, which submits nominations to the Chinese Embassy in Accra under the bilateral agreement. (2) Directly through a Chinese university as a university-nominated CSC scholar. Both channels use the CSC online system at csc.edu.cn. Applications open January–March for September entry.
Is WASSCE accepted at Chinese universities for undergraduate entry?
Yes. Chinese universities accept WASSCE for undergraduate admission — minimum 5 credits including English and Mathematics. Some universities may also consider your University of Ghana or KNUST pre-tertiary results. For Masters applications, a complete Ghanaian bachelor's degree is required.
Do I need to learn Chinese to study in China from Ghana?
Not for English-taught programmes. However, learning basic Chinese (HSK 1–2) makes daily life significantly easier and is highly recommended. The Confucius Institute in Accra offers Chinese language classes and HSK exam preparation — attending before departure is a strong advantage.
What is the Ghanaian student community like in China?
Ghanaian students in China are a well-organised community, particularly in Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan. The Ghana Students Association in China (GSAC) organises cultural events, peer support and networking. Ghanaian food ingredients are available in international supermarkets in major Chinese cities.
What happens after graduation from a Chinese university?
CSC scholarship recipients are required to return to Ghana after their studies (part of the scholarship agreement). However, many Ghanaian graduates use their Chinese degrees and Mandarin skills to work in Ghanaian companies with Chinese partnerships, NGOs, government, or apply for jobs at Chinese firms operating in Africa. Some continue to a PhD in China.
